CFP Selection Sunday

We are less than an hour from Selection Sunday where the CFP committee will decide what four teams will make the playoffs.

Six teams have a chance to get in: Michigan, Washington, Texas, Florida State, Alabama, and Georgia. Michigan and Washington are locks to get in, leaving two spots between four teams.

Recap:

13-0 Michigan Big 10 Champion

  • 26-0 Win against Iowa

13-0 Washington Pac 12 Champion

  • 34-31 Win against Oregon

13-0 Florida State ACC Champion

  • 16-6 Win against Louisville

12-1 Texas Big 12 Champion

  • 49-21 Win against Oklahoma State

12-1 Alabama SEC Champion

  • 27-24 Win against Georgia

This is one of the most complicated scenarios that could have happened for the committee. If Oregon won things would have gotten even more complicated.

There are three routes the committee can go

Route 1 aka “Who fits the criteria”

The four criteria the committee looks at are

  1. Strength of Schedule
  2. Conference Championships
  3. Head-to-Head matchups
  4. Outcomes vs Common Opponents

Based on this the playoffs would be Michigan, Washington, Florida State, and Texas.

Michigan, Washington, and Florida State were undefeated with a conference championship. Alabama has the head-to-head against Georgia, but Texas has the head-to-head against Alabama so they get in over the Tide.

Route 2 aka “Who are the best four teams”

No criteria here. Put aside record and conference championships, who does the committee think the four best teams in the nation are? We don’t need to see more blowouts in the playoffs like in recent years…*cough cough* TCU vs Georgia championship game.

Based on this the playoffs would be Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Some may say Washington, but I think they get exposed by an elite defense.

Route 3 “A mix of both route 1 and route 2”

The committee can reward Michigan and Washington for going undefeated and winning their conference title so they get in. Florida State, even though you went 13-0 and won the ACC we don’t trust your backup or third-string QB, whoever is playing, to be competitive. Backup Tate Rodemaker, who has a concussion, has not put up any solid numbers, and third-string Brock Glenn went 8-21 in the ACC title game. Yes, they may deserve to get in on paper, but they will get destroyed. Now you have three teams to decide from for two spots and Texas and Alabama would get in. Texas beat Alabama by 10 on the road and Alabama has the best win this season snapping Georgia’s 29-game win streak. Sorry Dawgs, if you are gonna lose, lose at a better time.

My Ideal Playoff

  1. Michigan
  2. Alabama
  3. Texas
  4. Georgia

These are the best four teams in the nation. We get a rematch of Texas and Alabama to finally decide who the better team is at the end of the season and then we get a potential rematch of Georgia and Alabama.
