Jon Rahm to LIV
I woke up today and saw the red siren emoji next to an update from theScore and I knew something went down. Seeing “Jon Rahm joining LIV” is not something I expected to see but I guess when he has around half a billion dollars staring him in the face what do you expect?
What does this mean for Rahm?
Rahm’s deal with LIV Golf is a multi-year deal reportedly worth roughly 500 million dollars. He will still be able to compete in all four major tournaments: The U.S. Open, PGA Championship, The Open Championship, and The Masters until 2027 (lifetime for the Masters).
History
Rahm was not a fan of LIV Golf when it first came around. He criticized the format, and lack of competition, and simply said it was not for him.
The PGA Tour and LIV Golf merged during the summer so this move is not as much of a surprise to me as it would have been if it was before the merger. Rahm probably figures, well if we are teaming up with them I might as well cash in. I think if Rahm does get any negative feedback from fans it’s because he is such a likable guy and many people root for him so to see him “turn his back” on the Tour may leave a sour taste in some people’s mouths.
My Opinion
When LIV Golf first started I was not a fan of it at all. Seeing guys like Bryson, Koepka, and Cameron Smith all leave the Tour bothered me because these are some really good golfers and I wanted to see the best of the best out there for every PGA tournament. I am still not a fan of it, but I look at it more like it is what it is. As a fan who will never sniff 500 million dollars in my life, I can easily say “Wow what a sell out how do you not stay loyal to the Tour.” But like…when I think about it….500 million dollars means I am set for life, my kids are set for life, and their kids are set for life so I understand the decision, but it still sucks to lose a guy like him.
