NFL Offseason Superlatives
This has by far been the best and most entertaining offseason I have ever witnessed. So many players on new teams and we have not even made it to the NFL Draft yet. The last week has been full of huge signings, big trades, and surprising releases. To recap some of the moves in the past week, below are offseason superlatives for teams and players.
Best Offseason
Houston Texans
The Texans were one of the most exciting teams last season after rebuilding at a rapid speed. They hit the jackpot in the 2023 draft with Stroud, Will Anderson, and Tank Dell and they once again hit the jackpot, this time in free agency. They bolster their defense and pass-rushing ability with Danielle Hunter and add on a solid RB in Joe Mixon. They also re-signed tight end Dalton Schultz who was huge for Stroud in his first season.
Worst Offseason
Dallas Cowboys
The funniest team in the league every year continues to make me laugh. They have lost a lot of key players like Pollard, Tyron Smith, Gallup, Vander Esch, and Gilmore. They have barely made any moves to get to the next level, which for them is just not choking in the first round of the playoffs. They desperately need a running back and should aim for Jonathon Brooks in the draft.
Best Trade
Chicago Bears/Keenan Allen
The Bears seem to have finally moved past the haunting of the double doink and have put together a solid rebuild attempt this offseason. One reason for their turnaround is trading for star wide receiver Kennan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers for a 4th-round pick. Allen denied taking a pay cut from the Chargers after coming off a huge season where he racked up 108 catches, 1,243 yards, and 7 touchdowns in just 13 games. Allen will be perfect for whatever rookie QB Chicago drafts as he is as reliable and consistent as they get.
Best Signing
Atlanta Falcons/Kirk Cousins
The Falcons have all the young weapons a team can ask for- Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, and Drake London, but they just need someone to be able to command the offense and take the team to the next level. And that man is Kirk Cousins. Before tearing his Achilles he was tearing up the league and having nothing good season. With the addition of Cousins, this offense should take off and help Bijan, London, and Pitts reach their full potential. Atlanta
Surprise Signing
Tennessee Titans/Tony Pollard
I strongly believed Pollard was gonna remain in Dallas. I would have thought if other teams expressed interest the Cowboys would have tried to make sure he stayed because now their starting running back is Deuce Vaughn. Even if somebody told me Pollard was not going to stay I still would not have expected the Titans to get him. It was obvious they were gonna lose Henry, but Spears showed some glimpses of being a solid back.
Best Fit
This category is tied between the Eagles/Barkley and the Ravens/Henry
The Eagles upgrade from Swift to Barkley and the Ravens upgrade from Edwards to Henry. Barkley’s talent can be on full display in this Eagles offense that as a strong O-line, runs the ball a lot, and chews up a lot of clock each possession. Hurts struggled towards the end of the season as he battled some injuries. I think with the addition of Barkley the play action will open up which will help AJ Brown and Devonta Smith. Not to mention, he stays in the NFC East which just makes this even better.
Heading over to Baltimore…this run option between Lamar and Henry may be the most dangerous the league has ever seen. I truly believe they can run RPOs on four straight plays and pick up the first down every time. Defenses are going to have to stack on the box which can lead to a lot of one-on-ones with receivers and defensive backs. This move may also be good for Lamar’s longevity as he can elect to hand the ball off more rather than run it himself knowing he’s got Henry.
