Scottie Scheffler: The Best Golfer in the World

Scottie Scheffler continues his 2023-24 season dominance as he earns his second green jacket in three seasons. Scheffler came into the contest as a +400 favorite, the lowest odds since Tiger Woods in 2013.

Days 1 and 2

Scheffler started the tournament with a bogey free round one score of 66, one shot back of the leader Bryson DeChambeau. Day two saw some of the highest scores of the tournament due to the brutal windy conditions, but Scottie found him self leaving the 18th hole with a round two score of 72 to remain at -6.

Moving Day

Day three was a rollercoaster for the number one golfer in the world as he entered the day tied with Max Home and DeChambeau. Scheffler began the round with a chip in birdie and followed it up with another birdie on hole three. However, the tough hole four Par 3 gave him trouble and dropped him back to -1 on the day. It was a clean scoresheet the remainder of the front nine, but holes 10 and 11 wreaked havoc. Scheffler found himself dropping in the standings after going double bogey on 10 and bogey on 11. He entered Amen Corner +2 on the day, but he did what he does best and turned the day around. After parring hole 12 he eagled the tough Par 5 thirteen and birdied the Par 5 fifteen to get to -1 on the day. The last two holes he played even with a bogey on 17 and birdie on 18 to get to -7 for the tournament.

Day three saw constant movement in the standings. We saw three way ties for first, we saw Scheffler as low as fourth place at one point, and we saw Nicolai Hojgaard have the solo lead until bogeying five straight holes.

Sunday

Despite the constant movement on Saturday, Scheffler held the solo lead entering Sunday at -7. He would be in the last group paired with Colin Morikawa who was -6.

Scottie’s solo lead faded on the front nine as he bogeyed the 7th hole while Ludvig Aberg was birding the 9th hole. At this moment Aberg held the solo lead at -7 and Scheffler was one back, but that would change it a matter of minutes. Sheffler began his run with three straight birdies on holes 8,9, and 10. While Scheffler was on the rise, the other golfers around him were falling. The 11th and 12th hole would claim not one, not two, but three victims. In a matter of 10-minutes Aberg and Morikawa both found the water on 11 resulting in a double bogey and Homa had to play an unplayable on hole 12 which also resulted in a double. Scheffler saw his opportunity and played both holes safe to put himself up three strokes heading into the Par 5 thirteen. Rather than continuing to play safe, Scottie birdied three out of the next four holes to get to -11 and ultimately securing another Masters win.

What this means for Scottie

If it wasn’t already known before this week, than it is definitely known now. Scottie Scheffler is the best golfer on the planet. Some may say Rahm or Hovland or Rory, and if they do, they are delusional. Not only did he win another major, but he won it with some of the best LIV golfers in the field like Rahm, Koepka, Bryson, and Cam Smith.

Scheffler’s 2023-24 Season

Scheffler now has three wins on the season as well as eight top-10 finishes and 9 top-25. In his last four tournaments he has finished first (The Masters), tied for second (Texas Children’s Houston Open), first (THE Players Championship), and first (Arnold Palmer Invitational). He continues to separate himself in total strokes gained, tee to green, scoring average, and greens in regulation. The one down part of his game is his putter, but even that has been heating up the past couple of months.
